How to...

Location

Enter the placename, postcode or Latitude/Longitude for the observation. Please try to be as accurate as possible. Once you have entered a location, a red marker will appear on the map. You can drag and drop this marker to help precisely mark your location.

As WOW will allow information to be submitted from anywhere in the world the easiest way to locate a place is to search using the format "placename, country" e.g. "Ottery St Mary, UK".

The 'Simple Observation' pull-down menu contains a short list of common types of weather to allow quick entry for users who do not wish to select from the list of 99 'Detailed Weather codes'. Definitions of the 99 'Detailed Weather Codes' and further guidance are contained with this downloadable Met Office guide. If you are entering an observation to record snowfall, an additional field will appear asking you to indicate the depth of snow currently lying on the ground. If there is no snow lying then please enter "0".
